V60 Brewing Guide And The Development

Pouring water into V60

Some people say that the soul of perfect coffee must be guided through brewing, and the V60 filter cup can indeed do this. Why can it be a standout?

The stories of Hario and the inventor of the V60 filter cup are intertwined into a popular product, extending the possibilities of more coffee. In fact, if you have a general knowledge of the history of the Chemex filter cup, you will know that it was a filter cup invented by a chemist. Hario was founded in Tokyo in 1921. In the beginning, it produced and sold glass-related products. After nearly 30 years of research, they founded Hario Glass, a company that uses 100% natural minerals to improve heat-resistant glass. Quality, and make it in line with the concept of environmental protection. Then in 1949, Hario launched the first household product: a glass filter siphon. In 1957, this product evolved into a filter cloth siphon pot.

Hario has won hundreds of design awards, but the V60 filter cup introduced more than ten years ago has become their most well-known invention. The name of V60 comes from the 60-degree inclination angle of the filter bowl. At first, it was made of ceramic and glass, and then plastic was invented, and finally, the metal filter bowl.

The most extreme invention of Hario V60 is Copper Coffee Dripper, which is designed with high thermal conductivity and heat preservation, which can bring better extraction results.

You can also use V60 to brew your breakfast coffee and start a delicious day.

What Can I Get With V60?

V60 is suitable for many brewing variables. In fact, it is ideal for more variables than most other filter cups on the market. The following are three considerations when designing the V60:

1. Filter bowl shape (60º): This allows water to flow to the center of the filter bowl, extending the powder-water contact time.

2. Single large hole at the bottom: The brewer can adjust the coffee flavor by changing the water flow rate.

3. Spiral rib design on the cup wall: This thread extends from the bottom to the top, allowing air to be discharged from the filter cup, maximizing the expansion of the coffee powder.

After reading these three design considerations, let us return to the brewing variable. The two most important variables that the brewer can manipulate are the grinding scale and the water flow. If you slow down the water injection rate, you may brew a full-bodied coffee. If you fill the water faster, it may make the brewed coffee lighter and lighter.

The grinding scale will also affect the thickness of the body. If you use a finer grinding (close to the thickness of table salt), the water may not flow smoothly, which may cause the following problems:

Stable water flow and fine grinding will produce medium mellow coffee. Slow water flow and fine grinding will make full taste coffee. Stable water flow and medium grinding will produce a light taste.

It should be noted that if the grinding size is too fine, it will lead to the siltation of water. Once the siltation affects the extraction, it is necessary to grind coarser.

After each adjustment of the variables, please taste your coffee carefully and finally get a taste that matches your preferences.

How To Be An Expert With V60?

Basically, you can use this filter cup to test quickly and freely. As long as you follow the basic steps below, you can combine many different brewing changes.

Preparation procedure:

1. Fresh hot water, the temperature is about 90º - 96ºC, and if you don’t have a thermometer, you can let it cool for about one minute after the water boils

2. Fold the filter paper (It is recommended to use bleached or natural material, which will not have a paper smell)

3. Soak the filter paper with hot water first. This action helps to remove the paper smell, and at the same time, allows the V60 and the lower pot to achieve the preheating effect. If the filter cup is not preheated, the hot water temperature may drop during brewing, and the coffee cannot be properly extracted.

4. Grind fresh coffee beans, and then you can start hand-punching.

Pouring procedure:

Because the angle of the V60 is relatively inclined, it is necessary to use a thin-necked pot to assist hand punching. Otherwise, it is difficult to extract evenly with a circular method, and the narrow-necked pot is very important for controlling water flow.

First, inject about twice the amount of powder into the V60 to make the coffee powder suffocate. Many people like this stage because watching the fresh coffee powder expand is very healing. After waiting for tens of seconds, it starts to circle. Fill water evenly. Grinding thickness and water flow will affect your water injection time, but usually, the ideal state must be between two to four minutes.

V60 Brewing Secret

Unless very fine grinding sizes are used, V60 will not clog. And because the water flow will be very fast, so you can choose a thinner hand pot.

Since V60 has four different materials, it is necessary to consider the degree of preheating the filter cup according to the material. For example, the preheating time of ceramic V60 is longer than that of metal, glass, and plastic.

Inject water counterclockwise, which will create more turbulence in the coffee powder bed and make the extraction more complete.
